3 Ways Advertising is like Exercise

If you want to have and maintain a healthy body you need to work out and exercise on a regular basis. It makes no difference if you “worked out really hard” 3 years ago and had the perfect body. Chances are if you stopped this regimen, you no longer have that body you once did. The same goes for a healthy business. If you advertised heavily and had loads of business “a few years ago” and now customers have stopped coming in. The answer as to why – relay should not be rocket science. Just as your muscles stop getting worked out if you stop exercising – your customers stop getting reminded of your existence if you stop advertising.
One of the most baffling things I hear often from business owners is the following: “Business is really slow, so we cut back on advertising, now its even slower… I don’t know what to do”. Did it occur to these people that the key to getting customers in the door is making them aware and excited about their businesses? Fading off into obscurity, is a sure ticket to a going out of business sale – NOT a one way ticket to increased business.
But “advertising” wasn’t working for me! Let’s say I walk into your business, pick up a Dixie cup from the water cooler, pulled the tab for water and nothing comes out. Should I immediately assume that EVERYTHING you sell “wont work”? Of course not. Your advertising plan may have been simply getting old. Every message has a shelf life. When was the last time you talked about something different? Maybe it was in a medium that does not have the same following as it once did. Or maybe – you were not getting enough exposure for what you could afford and need to find another outlet for your marketing dollars. I’m sure the answer is not simply to “Stop advertising”.
Chances are you are confused if you are in this state. You know your business! NOT the world of marketing. That is why at this point I would suggest talking with a marketing professional who can show you the options that are available to you on your budget. They work on a commission, so most of the time you never have to pay them anything as the outlets for advertising they get you on pay them for bringing in business. Most importantly – be honest with them. If your budget is 1k don’t tell them you can spend 5k and expect some sort of crazy discount to do business with you. These agents can negotiate deals and prices – they can’t work miracles. They want your business and will likely do whatever they can to get you the most for your budget – to ensure a turn around and a continued relationship.

How Effective Are Radio Commercials?
The answer to this question is quite simple – As effective as the person who wrote it. Contrary to popular belief (and contrary to what we hear all too often) an effective radio commercial should not just be a mundane cliché’ ridden script (i.e. conveniently located, don’t miss this, best selection ever, you won’t believe it!, etc) read by a deep voiced, over enunciating buffoon. Monetizing your blog or website within a short amount of time after its creation is quite important. Probably the simplest way to begin earning from a website is to run third party ads and accept advertisers requests to your website. Take a few steps initially to avoid failure from attracting the wrong advertisers rather than the right ones like so many do in the beginning. One of the most important things you can do for your website is to position it efficiently into the eyes of the advertisers you want to attract and then get them to take immediate action. So what should you do to get your advertisers making offers and getting their ads running?
Present Permanent Pricing: When you’re managing a niche website which is directed at serving greatly targeted audiences, the normal CPM advertising illustration doesn’t really work. On the whole, CPM is really nothing the advertising paying a price for every thousand times the ad is put on view. This is the reason that if you’re running a niche site then it is essential for you to go for a fixed pricing model in which you request a monthly payment for an exact ad.
For example, it could be something like, “Button Ad on Main Page – $200″. This would additionally make the advertisers feel happy because they’ll be paying a onetime charge and witness for themselves if they are reaping an excellent return on investment. So be sure you aren’t ever shooting for number pricing on a niche site.
Many sites do not have a dedicated page for the advertiser to get the information that is required. Publishing on your website on how someone can advertise with you, would be a great idea. With this being said, you need to focus on the quality of your links rather than just the number of them.
You can advertise your business by placing banner ads that appear across the top of various websites people go to frequently. You can also find various sites to sponsor you that will place small ads for you in exchange for you doing the same for them on your site. If you have a very small budget to work with consider Pay per Click advertising. This is a very effective way to reach people but you will only have to pay for the number of times your advertisement is accessed.

Why Flyers and Brochures are Effective Ways to Advertise
Walk down a suburban street in any developed industrialized nation and one thing will be remarkably constant: The letterboxes will be full, often overflowing. And they won’t just contain addressed, posted mail. The bulk of the material will often be brochures and flyers advertising businesses and services, many of them local.
Certainly, many people find this fact of modern life extremely annoying. Sometimes more than half the houses in a street will have signs angrily demanding that there be “no junk mail!”.
But this phenomenon proves something: Those flyers and brochures must be working! Otherwise businesses wouldn’t be paying to have them produced and distributed.
Without a doubt flyers and brochures have distinct advantages over other methods of advertising: Here are a few:
They are comparatively cheap to produce – flyers particularly so. Certainly, glossy multi-page brochures can be very costly, but basic one page black and white flyers are very inexpensive and can still work well. As long as they are clear and large enough to catch the resident’s eye, they can get your product or service noticed.
You can target the geographic areas that you want. Ultimately all business is local business. But some businesses are more local than others! Businesses that cater to a geographically specific market tend to get a very good response from flyers and brochures.
An example would be a pub or bar wanting to promote a one-off or regular theme night. Placing several thousand flyers in letterboxes around the venue would be a great way of telling people about this event. People do tend to be more likely to go to something that is close to where they live, after all.
Just as you can target runs geographically, you can also target them demographically. Say a pool table company is using brochures to get leads. There would be little point in targeting units, since they generally wouldn’t be large enough to contain the product. And pool tables are not cheap! So, the best results would come from a large run through middle to high income suburbs — houses only.
Of course it can be difficult finding distributors who can do a drop in this way. Most of the big distribution companies offer value but on a large scale. You must pay for a large drop, your promotional material is rolled up with several others, and no thought is put into which letterboxes are chosen! However, there are smaller distributors who can thoughtfully target your material. They are just less well known, and harder to find, that’s all.
You can put special offers on them. A flyer that says something like, “Present this and get a ten percent discount on any item in the store!” is a good choice. The incentive itself can increase sales. Secondly, it’s a great way of tracking the campaign, since the number of actual discounts can be recorded accurately.
People hang onto them. This is one definite advantage over newspaper advertising. Of course, many more people will see an ad placed in the paper. But to keep your contact details they have to cut the ad out, highlight it, or write it down – usually along with a lot of others. A flyer or brochure, however, contains all the details and can be kept indefinitely. Businesses often get leads from flyers or brochures that have been left on the tops of fridges or in desk drawers for months, even years!
Certainly, particular circumstances dictate that flyers and brochures are not always the best advertising method. But the above advantages make them a remarkably reliable, cost effective way of raising awareness and generating leads for most businesses.
